General Overview Of Lipitor
Lipitor known also by its chemical name Atorvastatin is used for various purposes:
- In adult patients with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease such as age, smoking, hypertension, or a family history of early coronary heart disease Lipitor is indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, risk of stroke and risk of revascularization procedures and angina.
- In patients with type 2 diabetes with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease such as retinopathy, albuminuria, smoking, or hypertension, Lipitor is indicated to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and to decrease the risk of stroke.
- In patients with clinically evident coronary heart disease, Lipitor is prescribed to reduce the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal and non-fatal stroke, the risk of angina and revascularization procedures.
Lipitor may be used for several other purposes as well, if it is determined by a physician. In fact the main functions of Lipitor are:
- to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in blood.
- to reduce the risk of heart attack, blood vessel blockage, or chest pain.
The recommended starting dose of Lipitor is 10 mg/day; the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg/day. Doses should be individualized in dependence on the recommended goal of therapy.
