Atenolol

Atenolol is a selective beta1-blocker with proven protective effect on the cardiovascular system. It is prescribed patients with hypertension associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease. Atenolol can also be used for the treatment and prevention of angina pectoris, supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, neurocirculatory dystonia of hypertonic type and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Atenolol belongs to a group of medicines called selective beta1-blockers acting mainly on the beta1-adrenergic receptors of the heart (cardioselective beta-blocker).
Atenolol possesses the following effects:
Exerts hypotensive effect;
Possesses antianginal effect, the mechanism of which is associated with slowing of heart rate and decrease of myocardial contractility, which leads to a decrease in myocardial oxygen demand and, consequently, the reduce the number of angina attacks;
Possesses antiarrhythmic effects by reducing the automaticity of sinus node, reducing the excitability of the myocardium and slowing down AV conduction.
Provides stable control of blood pressure and heart rate within 24 hours;
It is effective in adult patients of all age groups.

Atenolol protects the cardiovascular system: It has proved fatal reduction in the number of strokes on the background of antihypertensive therapy and improves survival after myocardial infarction in patients with hypertension receiving beta-blockers.
